Bricklaying FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we get asked most often on Hunter Valley jobs. If yours isn't here, ask us directly.

Questions and answers

How much does bricklaying cost in the Hunter Valley?

Most bricklaying is priced per thousand bricks laid, and the rate moves with access, scaffold, brick type and the amount of cutting and detail work. A straightforward single storey house is far cheaper per brick than a feature fireplace. We quote after seeing the plans or the site so the number you get is the number you pay.

What areas do you service?

We are based in Cessnock and work across Cessnock, Maitland, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the wider Hunter Valley including Kurri Kurri, Branxton, Pokolbin and Singleton.

How long does a quote take?

Send through your plans or photos and we normally have a written quote back to you within a few days. Site visits for repair work are usually booked within a week.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. GDK Bricklaying operates under ABN 17 695 770 818 and carries public liability and workers compensation insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request for builders and commercial clients.

Do you work with builders as well as homeowners?

Both. We contract to builders and developers on new home and multi-unit programs, and we work directly with homeowners on repairs, fireplaces, retaining walls and extensions.

How long should brickwork last?

Properly laid brickwork with correct ties, weep holes and articulation joints should outlast the rest of the house. Most brick problems we repair come from missing articulation joints, blocked cavities or rusted steel lintels rather than the bricks themselves.

How long does the brickwork take on a new home?

A typical single storey home in the Hunter takes around two to three weeks of laying, weather permitting. Double storey homes usually run three to five weeks including scaffold moves.

Do you work for owner builders?

Yes. We regularly work directly with owner builders around Cessnock and Maitland, and we can help you order the right brick quantities and mortar colour before we start.

Can cracked brickwork be repaired without rebuilding the wall?

In most cases yes. Fine cracks can be stitched and repointed. Full rebuilds are only needed where the wall has lost bearing or bowed out of plumb.

Will the new bricks match my old ones?

We match colour, size and texture as closely as the market allows, often using recycled bricks of the same era, and we tone the mortar to suit.

Do you build outdoor fireplaces for alfresco areas?

Yes, outdoor fireplaces with chimneys are one of our most requested jobs across the Hunter, and we can integrate a BBQ, bench and wood store into the same structure.

Can you build around an inbuilt wood heater?

We build to the exact clearance and flue penetration details supplied by the heater manufacturer, and we coordinate with your installer.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?

In most Hunter council areas walls under about one metre and clear of boundaries and easements are exempt, but higher walls generally need engineering and approval. We can point you to what your council requires.

How deep do the footings need to be?

That depends on wall height, soil classification and surcharge. Footing depth and steel come from the engineer's design, and we build strictly to it.

Do you supply the blocks or does the builder?

Either. Most builders supply, but we are happy to quote supply and lay and organise delivery to site.

Can you lay block on a sloping site?

Yes. We step footings and courses as required and coordinate with the concreter so levels work out at the top of the wall.

Are you insured for commercial sites?

Yes. We carry public liability and workers compensation cover and provide SWMS and certificates of currency before starting on site.

How large a project can you take on?

We scale crews to suit. Talk to us with your program and lot count and we will tell you honestly what we can commit to.
